Getting Into a Healthy Dental Routine

Establishing good oral hygiene practices is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. Here are some tips on how to create a healthy dental routine.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day, for Two Minutes

The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth for a full two minutes, twice a day. Most people brush their teeth twice a day, but fewer brush for two minutes. Brushing twice a day for the recommended amount of time keeps your teeth clean which over time, prevents your need for harsh dental procedures like root canals. To help you get in the habit of brushing for the proper amount of time, you can buy an electric toothbrush that beeps when time is up.

Floss At Least Once a Day, Every Day

Flossing is one of the most important aspects of your oral health but it’s often one that we find ourselves skipping. When you floss, you remove plaque from between your teeth. If plaque is left on your teeth, it can cause cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. Whether you use traditional floss or dental picks to clean your teeth, as long as you’re flossing at least once a day it doesn’t matter what tool you use.

Chew Sugarless Gum

When you chew sugarless gum, your salivary flow increases, which washes away acids that are produced when food is broken down by bacteria in your mouth. Without saliva, acid breaks down your tooth’s enamel, which can lead to decay, cavities, and other more serious dental problems. An increase in saliva means an increase in phosphate and calcium, which strengthens your tooth’s enamel. By chewing a piece of sugarless gum after meals, you are taking steps to improve your oral health. Remember though, it’s only beneficial if you reach for sugarless gum!

Stop Smoking

If you’re a smoker, kick the habit to get your dental and overall health back on track. There are a number of great resources to help you quit smoking including gum, patches, smoking cessation groups, apps that track your progress, and more.

Watch Your Diet

A healthy diet is important to good oral health. Make smart choices by eating nutritious foods, such as fruits and vegetables that can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates, such as candy and chips, can lead to serious dental issues like cavities.
